OWL responses focus first on issues of larger concern such as content, purpose, and organization and move on to issues of sentence structure and grammar when necessary.
In this way, we are able to see that the student has a sense of the problem and at least some tools for addressing it. We use theories and frameworks such as critical literacy, contrastive rhetoric, and rhetorical listening as we aim to enact a pedagogy of belonging. Because the OWL exists in a text-only environment, it is not preferable to a face-to-face consultation.
